Halloween

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Halloween is an international holiday celebrated on October 31. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting haunted attractions, carving jack-o'-lanterns, reading scary stories, and watching horror movies.
Visit a ghost town or take a trip to Hell, Michigan for screaming good fun this Halloween season. Michigan communities get very creative when it comes to ghouls, goblins, ghosts and scary but merry events. Ride a ghost train, walk a haunted trail, get lost in a maze or cave, or visit one of five Zoo Boo’s that offer lots of treats for small goblins.

Ghost towns are plentiful in Michigan. The Bay County Historical Museum offers a guided tour, "Ghosts, Legends and Other Bay City Lore," through some of Bay City's most historic neighborhoods. The Keweenaw Peninsula, once home to the thriving copper industry, has several ghost mining towns that make for a fun vacation attraction. Visit the towns of Delaware, Mandan, Gay, Phoenix and Old Victoria located near Rockland. The Old Victoria mine site offers tours during the fall color season.

The great Harry Houdini died on October 31 at the former Grace Hospital in Detroit. Houdini, a world famous magician, was known for his amazing escapes, including the one that brought on his death from the chilling October waters of the Detroit River. Colon is considered the Magic Capital of the World, and home to the grave sites of three generations of Blackstone family magicians. For a chilling Halloween weekend, a visit to Colon is perfect to pick up a few tricks to mystify friends.

Have fun this coming Halloween!
