Homeschooling: Thoughts about It

Thank God it’s Friday and it’s a pay day for my husband as well! I was kind a excited about this week because then I will have the chance to shop for new clothing for our kids this Fall. It seemed like the weather here in Michigan is getting cooler each and every day. I can’t wait to get my kids some new clothes for winter time.

Anyway, since it is Friday, it also mean one thing, it is time for Aloha Fridays, a weekly meme which brought to you by a Hawaiian Mom who owned An Island Life blog. I’ve been joining this meme for years but I was on and off due to some busy schedules I had. Good thing to know, I was back for now. It’s so easy to join, if you want to join. All you need to do is visit all the blogs and answer the question they posted on their blogs and you can make your own post too and ask some interesting questions.

This week, I was really so in deep thoughts of getting to the level of maybe becoming a teacher to own children.  My son had been a year late when it comes to schooling. He just started schooling this year and he is already 5 years old. He was still in pre-school. Next year, hopefully he will be in kindergarten but then he’s going to be 6 years old. So my husband and I were thinking of maybe putting in a homeschooling program. I also have learn and heard from some of my friends who home schooled their kids that these kids were literally in advance. So I thought in order for my son to be in advance, we will just home school him on kindergarten curriculum. We knew our son had a potential, he is a smart boy yet somehow, and he was not potty trained yet. I was trying but the boy seemed uninterested. He is also having problem with eating disorder.  Yet academically, my son is a bright boy. It is just that he has a little bit of impatience sometimes.

So, my question is: have you ever thought about homeschooling? Any thoughts are really much appreciated. I accept any negative and positive outlook you might have in mind about homeschooling, too. Share any experiences as well.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

No, homeschooling isn't for our family!

It's not that I'm against homeschooling but in my circumstances, it wouldn't be in my 6-year-old daughter's best interest. We have great public schools here and with her being an only child, she would have very limited contact with other children if she was home schooled. She needs to learn the social skills that being around other children teaches her. At home, she rules the house so it's good for her to learn it's not like that outside the home :)

Happy Friday!

Princess Nagger has what's considered a 'late' birthday (they have to be 5 by August 30th or wait until the following school year, which she had to do), so when she was in Kindergarten and turned 6 a couple of months into the school year, she was the oldest in her class which sort of bummed her out. She, like your son, is extremely smart, but instead of allowing kids with a late birthday to test to see if they could be in a higher grade level (at least one grade further) they just test them for the Gifted Program where she can take advanced classes while still in her 'assigned' class grade.

I thought about homeschooling, because it is a benefit for kids to learn at their own pace - faster or slower - but she loves hanging out with her friends at school, and I don't think I'd have the patience to teach her daily...I barely have enough patience to get her to do her homework! :) That being said, my sister homeschooled both her boys all the way up until their senior year, where they went for the final year of school so they could go through the whole graduation celebration with the caps, gowns and getting handed their diploma.

If you have the patience to do it, I say go for it! :)

We use to take my kids to Florida to spend a lengthy stay at my parents house. Full-time though, we'd all be on each other's nerves I'm sure.

Have a great weekend!

I wanted to do homeschooling early on. My husband didn't.

I'm not sure how I feel now.

No I haven't. My husband has but he doesn't have the patience for it.

My kids graduated from high school in 1995, 1997 and 2000. They would not have liked homeschooling and ... it wasn't all that popular back then. They were also more interested in the social aspect of school then the academics. haha When my husband and I married in 2000 we planned on having two or three children and we planned on homeschooling from the get go. We're avid travelers and we the plan was to tour the world teaching the babies all they needed to know. We were not able to have babies of our own however we are relishing our calling as grandparents.

I'm all for it. My children (not kids=goat babies) love being home and tagging along with me. We go everywhere and the best part is, I don't need the public schools permission to go on a long vacations. We do their lessons Monday to Friday. I believe it is the parents responsibility to educate their children and I am doing it for five years now. I educate my children, I do not homeschool them. And yes I am Filipina with no teaching degree.
